Wesley R. Elsberry, just today posted a blog concerning Google, and his serious issues with their process of de-indexing sites. He basically attacked their entire system of communicating with the billions of websites that dote them so. Apparently, one of the websites that he answers for, that has been around since 1995, http://talkorigins.org/, was de-indexed by Google with no fair warning and absolutely no real reason. The enigma grew heavy within Mr. Elsberry's soul, as he pondered a reason why his soul mate had left him in such a rush, with no notice. What was wrong with the website? He attempted to contact Google, numerous times, through emails and phone calls. He received no response from his life partner concerning their acts of mutiny against the website that found haven in their search engine for 11 years now.
The webmaster that he is, he was able to begin his search for the devious little bugger that might have fallen through the crack among the 5,000 pages that comprised it(something that was wrong with his site.) Turns out, from the furious fingers of Wesley himself,
"At the bottom of the page, buried within an ASP function that prevented it from being visible on browsers, was a block of bad links, links that had nothing to do with the TOA. Checking the file on the server, I found that it was changed on 2006/11/18."
He made the appropriate changes, right away, and resubmitted to Google noting the issue that had come about, through no fault of the website owners, developers, designers or contributors. A Hack, another freedom available among the internet parallel, someone had hacked his site. But, he is quite fortunate to be able to find such a hack, fix the problem, and resubmit to Google in time to save himself face and recognition. Some of us may not be able to sift through our sites and find a flaw that deem our site unsuitable according to Google's algorithmic, intricate brain. Needless to say, he's pretty disheartened by the entire thing...
With the vast amount of real estate on the web, and the infinite freedoms that come with it, webmasters are still, to some extent, held behind bars by the media giants that mold us. Google, the biggest and baddest big boy internet icon out there has every one of it's pretty little pets by the balls. Oh yes, you know who I'm talking about...You, me, every person who owns a website and has the smallest whim to get it noticed.
In a world where we base ourselves according to our comparison and affiliation with sites like Google, Yahoo, Myspace, Youtube, etc. Is the dependency, need and adoration being reciprocated? Of course not, you say. Well...Saying that out loud puts an entire new spin on the idea. Think about it, Google pretty much owns you. When a majority of America won't submit to a president, a God, for pete's sake a paper or plastic grocery bag, we, as web masters and professionals, have submitted our livelihood to the all powerful, all knowing, conglomerate construct of the internet world, none other than Google.com.
