Skiing Related Injuries to the ACL

Over the years ski equipment has undergone several different changes to better equip the modern rider in terms of safety. While lower leg and ankle injuries have gone down drastically, knee injuries especially ACL injuries, have increased. The authors of this study hypothesized that posture plays a big role in the cause and prevention of ACL injuries when skiing. It was shown that ACL injuries are directly related to the “anterior drawing force by the quadriceps, in addition to the passive factor of extrusion of the lower leg by the boot”. It’s believed that the violent force of a quadriceps contraction in order to avoid a backward fall is a common mechanism in ACL injuries.

Test subjects for this study were fitted with a ski boot on only one leg and positioned into a force plate at a set inclination angle of 20 degrees. They were then fitted with 40 landmarks of a joint analysis system and a EMG was used to measure muscle activity of the hamstrings and quadriceps. The knee was kept at a constant 30 degree angle at all three postures forward, neutral and backwards. The results of the study showed in a “backward bending skiing posture,
the extension moment of the knee joint and imbalance of muscle contraction of the quadriceps and hamstrings were increased”. The authors suggested that this imbalance and increase of the extension moment in the knee joint may be an important factor to ACL injuries. The results of the present study suggest that “the internal force exerted by the quadriceps, in addition to the passive factor of extrusion of the lower leg by the boot, may contribute to noncontact
ACL injury in a backward bending posture in skiing”.

This is important because many people attribute a tear in the ACL to the knee being locked and the body falling forward. While this is a common way to injure the ACL, this article suggested that a backward bending posture when skiing may be a better way to balance out the muscle contraction of the hamstrings and quadriceps which in turn will balance the force being exerted on the knee joint when skiing.

Knowing this information is a good patient education tool to use in my practice and depending on the location of my practice it may be a useful bit of information to tell any of my patients before they head to the slopes. It is my understanding that chiropractic does not treat patients with injuries to the ACL unless there is a rehab component to the practice. I don’t foresee myself owning a practice where I have a physical therapy element but who knows what the future may hold.

Some of the drawbacks of this study were that they only measured one leg on the force plate while the other was left to dangle next to it. It seems to me that an experienced researcher would want to measure both legs at the same time in order to best simulate a skiing posture. Measuring only one leg at a time may have created more variables that could have gone unnoticed. This can be seen in the forward bending posture photograph, where the leg being measured is in the correct position but the opposite leg is being hyper extended. This is not the normal position of a skier in a forward bending posture and may have led to incorrect results. I however do not believe that the results of this paper impact chiropractic in a negative way because the purpose of this study way to better understand skiing posture and its affect on ACL injuries. This article will help to better educate my patients on proper ways to avoid injuring themselves by using proper techniques on the slopes.

U.S. Military Veterans Suffer from Service-Related Asbestos Illnesses

According to the United States Department of Veterans Affairs, out of the millions of veterans who served the country, asbestos exposure has affected thousands during their service.

Asbestos was utilized in many industrial applications throughout the 20th century. Due to its flame resistant and durable qualities, it possessed many of the traits that were needed in construction and the military. Asbestos exposure has affected many industries including power generation, the military, real estate and shipyards.

Asbestos appeared on most ships used by the Navy and in the shipyards they were built in. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs stated that out of the 25 million military veterans living today in the country, hundreds of thousands were exposed to asbestos while on service. Thousands of tons of asbestos were placed as insulation in piping, boilers, sleeping quarters and navigation halls.

At the turn of the 20th century, the asbestos industry became a major enterprise and experience major economic gain and thousands of dedicated employees. Manufacturers of asbestos and the U.S. Navy were aware of the dangers surrounding asbestos and evidence demonstrates any information showing this was covered up. While the Navy had created one of the more formidable and powerful Naval fleets in the world, asbestos concerns were silenced and military personnel was working under a ticking time bomb.

Although asbestos exposure does not always lead to a related disease, frequent inhalation of asbestos fibers will surely raise those chances. Exposure can lead to the development of asbestosis and mesothelioma.

Many mesothelioma symptoms are similar to other disorders, making it especially difficult for physicians to diagnose. Mesothelioma treatments have varied affects on patients because once the disease has manifested, it is usually in the later stages of development. Mesothelioma survival rate varies from patient to patient, depending on many factors. These include age of diagnosis, latency period and cigarette smoking.

United States combat troops stationed in Iraq face many dangers on a daily basis, while performing military operations and facing enemy combatant fire. With over $194,000 worth of asbestos imported to Iraq in 2003, many are unaware to the threat posed because of this. This presents a significant hazard for all soldiers stationed in the country because intense winds and desert sands can carry asbestos dust for long distances.

Military veterans who have unfortunately contracted an asbestos-related illness find themselves in a tough situation. Currently, mesothelioma is not recognized as a service-related medical ailment. This makes receiving compensation and benefits for their wrongful illness a tough task.

However, veterans can apply for Veteran Affairs (VA) benefits for asbestos-related illness and must provide proof that their exposure occurred at the time of their military service.

Many Navy vessels, homes and public facilities could still harvest asbestos-laden materials in older construction materials, brakes, gaskets and clutches. The potential remains for another generation of veteran and civilian asbestos exposure. Individuals should be aware of the hazards involved with this obsolete substance and take the proper initiatives to avoid exposure.

The Basics

Contrary to what many people might think, radio Podcast refers to the concoction of specific methods and not really a new invention in and of itself.

For example, let’s say you are but a little voice in a big world and you long to be a radio podcast. How would you go about that?

First of all, get yourself recorded digitally using a computer software program. Then you would need to convert that voice to an MP3 file format. After that, you have to put that file into some kind of syndication feed (think… RSS or Atom.) The feed has to be transferable to an MP3 player or news and radio aggregator that accepts audio feeds.
That is the basics of radio Podcasting over the web and exactly how to do it. There are many methods to converting your recorded audio into readable RSS formatted files and putting them on a web server. The basic idea is to convert your recorded audio files into an RSS document using the XML language. You can hand code this process in XML or use a simple RSS file generator and open source Podcast publishing tools. As the publisher you can choose what information to include inside the document, in turn, that information will be what subscribers hear and see when they listen (view) your podcast through their reader.

Just like with any online content, in order to gain an audience and have your podcast distributed you also need a bit more information beyond the recording and syndicating. You need to have a way to put the feed URL into the readers of your target subscriber base. Once you have created your RSS file all you have to do is upload that file and all of your audio files onto the web. If you have access to your own website, blog or web server you can simply publish your RSS file and audio files on your website and give people the link to subscribe to it. You can also put your RSS file in online directories related to your Podcast topic and gain a larger audience base.

In conclusion, Radio Podcasting is a method of utilizing existing technologies to facilitate new ways of distributing portable audio media. The idea is fairly new and originated out of a two word description (Radio Podcast) of portable audio media. With the wave of online media communication including: blogging, online communities and user generated news items radio podcasting sprung. Using the relatively simple XML and RSS technologies, online radio can be updated, distributed and listened to daily through feed readers across the world.

The History

The history of the Podcast goes back a relatively short ways considering its use of newer technologies and ideas. The true beginning of the term “Radio Podcast” as it is used today would have to be February 12, 2004. Bill Hammersley is a British journalist and in one of his articles in The Guardian (A British Newspaper) he referred to the boom of amateur radio and portable audio blogging in many ways, one term he used while describing and examining current portable audio technologies was, “Podcasting.”

While this marks the first documented appearance of the word, “Podcast” it does not mark the beginnings of Podcast technology. After all, it is merely a word to describe a sequence of methods used to record, easily distribute and mobilize audio media. In order to delve deeper into the history of Podcasting, further explanation of the technology behind it is needed.

ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW:

The Technology

Receiving audio media through an automatic tool requires what is now known as a feed reader or aggregator. Distributing media to these readers requires XML files containing the information to read from. These XML formatted files originally contained what is now called RSS (really simple syndication.) This automation of transfer is done through the use of the internet and identified using a uniform resource identifier, most commonly a URL and/or URI. This information is placed inside the feed, usually and initially as an RSS file. Using the uniform resource identifier and internet availability the feed is put online and individuals can obtain (subscribe to) the feed and read its contents through their feed reader.

The technology behind the RSS documents exists as an XML document. XML stands for Extensible Markup Language and is the formatted code that is placed inside the RSS document. While the language inside an RSS document is written in XML, the file extension of the RSS file is .rss. The information stored inside an RSS file can include many different things including title, description, dates, file URL, file type, etc. The RSS file must contain the location of your audio file in order to play correctly. The location of your audio file called out inside the XML document is in direct relation to the entire website, weblog, etc.. For example, if your audio files are in a sub directory folder labeled, “podcastfiles,” your website address is: http:///www.mywebsiteaddress, and the audio clip is called: myaudioclip.mp3, the location of that clip inside the RSS document would look like this:
http://www.mywebsiteaddress.com/podcastfiles/myaudioclip.mp3
That way the XML document knows where to find that file in order to play it back for your subscribers in their feed reader.

The feed can automatically be updated with the use of Push Technology. The concept of each feed being updated automatically by the publisher and “pushed” to the subscriber is the basis of this idea and is what really distinguishes the idea of feed readers and RSS documents. For example, you can receive news updates, weather updates and, of course, the latest entries of you favorite radio podcast right through your feed reader, without doing anything but receiving the latest “pushed” information.

It is important to note that the technology behind XML, RSS and feed readers is not exclusive to Podcasting and remains consistent with the methods of news article feeds, blog feeds, education feeds, etc.

Revenge on Film: Tim Burton's Newest Classic

The most vivid memory I have of a revenge plot portrayed on film is in Quentin Tarantino’s “Kill Bill.” Beatrix Kiddo, also referred to as “The Bride” in this riveting film takes out an elaborate revenge plot to kill the people responsible for destroying her wedding and killing her unborn child. Revenge has taken over her entire being and has even become her sole purpose for living.

Revenge can play such a powerful role in life; as such it is portrayed in movies as an even more fantastic emotion. It creates purpose, drive and entices every emotion all at once from sympathy to anger. What made the revenge plot so interesting in “Kill Bill” is the cosmic tension between her and her mark: Bill. It seems as if it’s almost destiny even from the first moment that Bill enters the movie, before he destroyed the wedding. It’s also very interesting in that “The Bride” is portrayed as almost noble, rectifying the loss of a baby’s life; while killing, mercilessly, in cold blood. Basically, revenge makes for top notch entertainment!

My Favorite scene in Kill Bill is her unlikely escape from a wooden casket, buried 6 feet into the ground. The scene is so intimate and you almost feel as though you’re inside the wooden space with her. The contrast between her brief recollections of her intense martial arts training with Hattori Hanzo while waiting patiently inside the grave is also a great scene.

Sweeney Todd, The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, is a new movie out starring Johnny Depp and produced by Tim Burton. * visit Sweeney Todd on MySpace * The theme of the new movie is also revenge and with a star cast like Depp and producer Tim Burton, there is no telling how far the movie will take this already intense human emotion and strangely capture the magic of it on film. The imagery is sure to capture every sense and emotion, the trailer is a beautiful mini film in and of itself.

Just as revenge seems to completely rearrange human decency and give way to our inclination to what Freud calls, the “id.” Sweeney Todd is the story about a man who is thrown from the life he built for himself into a drastically alternate reality, transforming him into a strange and obtuse killer (probably more closely related to the Johnny Depp characters we all know and love.) What I’ve already seen through the trailer and reading up about this upcoming film, it seems to have the perfect concoction of humor, fantasy, raw emotion and imagery that you can always expect from a Tim Burton film. visit Sweeney Todd on MySpace

The Google Page Rank is a number scaled from 1-10 that essentially ranks a website importance in the Google Search Engines. But, if you have been following SEO over the years and Google Page Rank you probably already know that the Page Rank system is becoming less and less important. During this recent Page Rank drop, the big sites who saw their rank plummit proved this fact in that their rank did drop, while their traffic stayed the same.

Why Did Google Drop Page Ranks?

Google said that the drop in page ranks was a direct result of websites who use paid linking systems and back links in order to get a better Page Rank effectively getting better search results. Google has adamantly resisted the paid linking system and says that it is unethical according to the search engine's ranking and result system.

When I was an 8th grader my parents gave me a choice. I could either get a computer or I could get braces. Looking back, this is an interesting delimma to have faced, especially today when I'd be willing to sacrifice a meal for time on the internet.

I chose a computer. The internet sounded pretty sweet and while it took us many failed attempts through our old dial up service, eventually I was online and enjoying every adventurous second of it.

Now I'm a bit older, missing a chunk of my back right tooth that aches (nothing to do with braces, or lack of) and am reading about inexpensive laptops that are being marketing towards children. Get 'em while they are young.

Just don't put up billboards by schools!

The XO is no replacement for your Dell. There are critical things it cannot do, like store lots of photographs and music. There's no certainty that it will print on whatever printer you happen to own. And don't expect lots of customer support: OLPC is not set up to provide it. But instead buy this machine for its unique charms - as a learning tool for a kid at home or as a web-surfing machine that seems to run forever on a battery at Starbucks.

Hey, that works for me. I have a feeling this is unit is going to sell like hot cakes. Most people don't want to deal with the clutter of a traditional CPU and even laptop. Most people like to think they are helping the poor become unpoor through innovative technoligies. Most people want their kids to start messing with technology as soon as possible.

I’ve been to almost every great city near and beyond the east coast and Europe. Big cities, especially tourist oriented cities are often dirty, crowded and all feel the same. Ask anyone who’s been to Paris, they cannot argue that Paris is a pretty filthy city. (sorry, but it’s dirty and littered almost throughout.) That’s why I have to say, one of my favorite cities is Chicago, IL because it’s so much cleaner than most cities, is airy and less crowded, and has just as much culture if not more than other cities across the U.S.

If you’re traveling to Chicago, first know that the city is a bit bigger than most cities, and you’ll find interesting and culture filled attractions almost throughout.

The main area of their city features the famous aquarium, which is absolutely amazing and can honestly entertain you almost an entire day. The main area of the city also has things like the Hancock Tower, art museums, history museums and science centers. I would recommend these Chicago Tours:

So, Radiohead isn't a very popular band, in fact, I bet most people haven't even heard of them. Wait, that's not true at all, Radiohead is HUGE! I love them, you love them, we all love Radiohead. From Pablo Honey to Kid A, they're eclectic crazy, sexy, modern and interesting.

Anyway, now that I got that out, let me tell you about Radiohead's Free Album! Their newest album, "In Rainbows" is available absolutely free on their website. As a downlaod of course, the actual box set will cost you $40. Record Industry Assholes sue Jamie Thomas for $222,000

Jamie Thomas, a middle income working woman recently lost a lawsuit to the record industry for over 200 grand. They alleged she shared 1,702 songs in all and focused on 24 songs in particular, with a $9,250 fine for each song.

I got one question for Jamie; that's all? You must be a slacker because EVERYONE I know that loves music and frequently goes to concerts has ripped off more music than that. The thing is, they are not ripping anyone off, instead, these thieves are spreading the message of their favorite music without any hint of attempting to profit.

Record industries who charge $20 for a cd are the criminals. The are greedy fucks who are not about integrity, rather, money.

The record companies accused Thomas of downloading the songs without permission and offering them online through a Kazaa file-sharing account. Thomas denied wrongdoing and testified that she didn't have a Kazaa account.

What's next?

More criminal behavior by corporate dickfucks.

I don't know but Radiohead figured out something cool; go independent. Their new album, "in Rainbows" is free. That's right, free to download and $40 to buy a hard copy. Now that is sweet and a much better reaction than Metallica and Dr. Dre had to Napster back in the day.

Music downloading is easy. So is online gambling. So is buying drugs. So is speeding. And on and on.

The fact is, 99.9% of musicians benefit off of free downloads because it's free publicity. The record industry does not care about the product or the fans, only the bottom dollar. Hopefully more musicians do what Radiohead did and I'll keep going to their shows. You better believe I'm not buy a freaking album from Wal-Mart. Check out this DigitalPoint thread about the next google pagerank. 331 pages of useless nonsense. Nobody seems to know when the next Google Page Rank update will occur except for Google Technology, herself.

According to the estimated Google Page Rank calendar cycle, the next update was to occur in late July but for whatever reason, nothing has happened yet for most people.

Apparently some have changed rank but the vast majority of us are left scratching our heads. Especially people who have sites with a ton of content, just waiting to get more advertising dollars.

Why the delay?

The hell if I know. This is google people, so everything is sworn to secrecy. Hell, the only reason I'm writing about this is because I've wasted too much time reading the above mentioned DigitalPoint thread. Now at least I'm being productive.

Seriously, the amount of time people waste on this stuff is dumb. But the reality is it does affect certain markets and perceptions, so we are all stuck to it, like it or not.

People are speculating that they are doing away with it or making big changes but I seriously doubt it. They are just delaying it and probably making little adjustments. It'll happen and they'll make us wait, laughing all the way to the bank.

Going back to Napster, LimeWire and the other file sharing networks, that do technically distribute illegal software, music and video downloads....Media Defender monopolized the industry of stopping it.

Now, it seems, that technology cannot stop the anti-consumer, hacker or Highschool student for that matter from downloading their favorite pop tunes illegally and well, free!

Restore Windows Vista Extract Function

**This is a helpful fix for Windows Vista users.

In order to drag this little tip out, and make it somewhat interesting, I'll start straight from the beginning...
I was browsing online the other day, and came across some great templates for web designers. They were all in the "Stuffit" format, and for those of you who don't know that means they had an .sit extension and are typically used on MACs. But, there's a free utility out there that will help you unload the stuffit files on a PC as well. The software is free and can be downloaded online at Stuffit Expander unless you need the Deluxe version.

Anyway, so I very effortlessly download the software and use it to unload the stuffit files I found online that I needed. No problems, no hassles. The next day I downloaded some other .zip files from the web, which is something I do almost every day. Windows Vista and XP have a great little utility built in, where all you have to do is right-click and you can choose to "extract all" to compress and Uncompress Zip Files. The only problem is, when I went to extract these files, Windows no longer recognized the "zip" extension, and actually didn't even know how to handle the files. AHHH!!!

So, I try and find a solution, to no luck whatsoever. In fact, after reading this quote from MSFN.org forum:

"Theres a huge blunder here it seems, the ZIP file association is non-existent in Vistas default programs panel. The list of file associations does not include ZIP (at least with my V.Ultimate installation). And watch out if you associate a ZIP file thru a 3rd party compression app, i.e., WinRAR, IZarc, etc, theres no way to get back Windows default compression function (thru conventional means)! You cant use the 'open with' command because the compressed folder function in Vista is not thru some executable file that you can browse to to associate with!"

I was beginning to get scared! Luckily I found this great little tool for Windows Vista that restores some of these natural windows function using regedit. Even your avi, ico, bmp, jpg, basically all file extension fixes. I used the zip download and everything was fixed and back to normal! Check it out here: http://www.winhelponline.com/articles/105/1/

Umm....I'm not sure where to begin with this one. You truly do, build an E-Commerce ASP.NET website application from beginning to end. But, it is for someone who already knows some about ASP.NET 2.0 and has used it before. What I don't really get about this book, is that it is written like you already know ASP.NET 2.0, so above my head already.

But, they try and go over CSS in the first couple chapters...Hmm....Maybe they didn't have a very good editor. It's one of those books you know was written by programmer, edited by a programmer, and never really fine tuned to communicate the message right. On the up side, it does cover almost everything you will want to do with ASP.NET 2.0, including E-Commerce, user roles, sessions, complex databases etc.

Someone who knows ASP.NET 2.0, has built websites with it before, and needs a reference for some of the complex aspects of a website. This will be a great book for a programmer who needs to build something like a content management system, and wants a reference while creating it to steer them in the right direction.

This was the first book I bought, very excited and thinking I would create a blog application in two hours. First of all, this book is by the same people who wrote the book above, "

It gives you a CD with projects already pre-built including: CMS Application, Photo Gallery, Opinion Polls, Newsletter Mailing Systems, and a couple more.
The applications do work, and then the book basically explains everything for you. Great if you want to use the applications right away and want to use them. Bad if you're interested in learning ASP.NET 2.0 from the ground up, like I was.

A few months ago I began learning ASP.NET using Visual Web Developer and the tools that come with it. ASP.NET 2.0 is a web application frame work, created by Microsoft and used to develop dynamic website applications. This language is the alternative to PHP for website development.

As far as hosting goes, ASP.NET 2.0 will need to use a Windows server ,while PHP can use a Linux.

As a semi-Noob web developer, I had only been using PHP for website development, while of course utilize MySQL for database applications. The programs I used to develop websites with PHP and MySQL was Dreamweaver. While, I coded most of the websites by hand, Dreamweaver helped me to organize my sites and the CSS files I was using.

ASP.NET 2.0 on the other hand, is typically used with the Microsoft web editing program, "Visual Web Developer." The Visual Web Developer Express version is absolutely free, and even comes with a free small server to test out your applications.

The reason I'm even talking about this right now, is because I was baffled, amazed, star struck and excited when I first decided to take the plunge and begin using Visual Web Developer and ASP.NET 2.0. I'm sure there are others out there who are thinking, "....Noob..." But, still, there may be others thinking, "Really? I should try it!" Yes...YOU SHOULD! The language is far more intuitive than PHP, Visual web developer is all around BETTER (for lack of a better word) than Dreamweaver, and you can begin creating dynamic websites and database driven applications in no time at all.

I'm officially in love, and will never go back to using PHP unless I want to play with my favorite CMS programs I have spent so much time learning, like the Open Source Software Joomla.

I also wanted to help anyone out there, who may have a similar skill set, find quality books to guide you on your way to learning ASP.NET 2.0 and Visual Web developer. When I first fell in love, I bought 5 ASP.NET books. Yep, count em' 5! That's because I'm crazy like that. Microsoft Vista does not blow....it sucks.

Check out the comments from Jim Louderback, a former PC Magazine editor, on why he said he's going back to Windows XP, "Now that I’m no longer working at PC Mag, I can finally tell you the truth. Vista blows. Vista is a boat anchor. Vista paid my salary for the past few years, but now that I’m no longer sucking on the Redmond teat I’m going to play hero and tell you what I didn’t dare tell you before."

First, this does not say much for PC Magazine. His statement pretty much ruins my odds of spending time on the site. Seriously, fool me once....

But something I noticed on a friends computer is that if you like Mozilla Firefox, be warned, Vista dummies it down. Now, maybe there is a way to work around it but if there is we could not figure it out.

Basically, you still get to use Firefox, but it strips it of all cool features. This, in my opinion, is raging b.s.

Seriously, what is Microsoft afraid of. IE7 dramatically improved from IE6 and it still is lagging behind Firefox.

The strong arm tactics are criminal and I think Bill Gates should give me a few thousand bucks from my displeasure.

Stylistically, Vista is better, I suppose. There are a few gimmicks that would appeal to a little kid or someone who want to sqeeze a few shower babies over all the lastest and greatest what-have-you's....but overall.....beyond sucky for the wait.

I have very little experience with the MAC but am thinking in another year or so when I'm aiming towards another computer, I'm finally going to rid myself of the Microsoft filth.

It's criminal, nothing less, nothing more.

E-Mail Scams: Tips and Awareness

After watching Oprah, yes I happen to watch an episode of Oprah, I realized that many people are falling for e-mail scams, and how clever these "scammers" are. In fact, I almost fell for a scam E-mail I recieved regarding my PayPal account, if it hadn't been for my internet savvy father warning me before hand. Primarily, I just want to help you to know if you recieve a scam e-mail, and how to avoid making yourself known.

First of all, the scam e-mails are generally related to any type of account with your personal information on the web.

This includes:

Amazon Accounts
E-Bay Accounts
PayPal Accounts

Etc, Etc.

On Oprah, a woman had been bidding on a wedding dress that she couldn't otherwise afford from the store. She won the bid, and followed through with purchasing until she reached a hault due to the fact that she had not met the reserve price. She was very dissapointed, but soon after recieved a professional looking Ebay e-mail saying that though she hadn't met the reserve price, the seller was willing to give her the dress at the price she bid.

Ecstatic, she responded right away asking the seller how she could proceed. In a very friendly way, they asked her to transfer the money into their Western Union account, at which time they would contact her with the shipping details. Hazed with wedding fever, she immediately did so and never once heard back from the recipient of her transfered $2,400.00

What happened here?

Even I was surprised to hear that it wasn't the seller who tricked her, it was someone closely watching the bidding price, and once they realized she had not met the reserve price and saw th auction go back up, contacted her directly using the E-Bay e-mail and ploying on her desperate, vulnerable bride-to-be state.

The moral of the story is it isn't hard to know if an e-mail is a scam. The first tip when diagnosing an e-mail as a possible scam:

1. If you have to think about it, IT PROBABLY IS!
Why? Because professional online account service companies NEVER request personal information, NEVER send account details involving money over e-mail and NEVER navigate you away from their site. All transactions are done through their website, so you know it is legit.

2. DO NOT for even one second, assume it isn't a scam because the company logo, graphics, fonts, etc. are in the e-mail. It is beyond easy to create an e-mail that looks like any one elses.

3. Legitimate online companies NEVER send you a specific link to a portion of their site that asks you to fill in delicate information. They will always ask you to log into your existing account and make changes.

That is pretty much my 2 cents worth of advice, if followed, you will never fall for an e-mail scam. Before I leave you, let me tell you about a common scam with many online account holders...The one I recieved regarding e-bay.

They tell you that they're going to cancel your account, and you need to click a link and fill in your account information otherwise your account will be void.

User-Generated sites to explode in next 5 years

According to a recent study by emarketer.com, the user-generated content/ web 2.0 era is yet to hit full stride.

Currently 70 million internet users will create some form of online content this year.

In 2006, user-generated sites earned $450 million. By 2011 that number will be an estimated $4.3 billion.

What does this mean?

There are going to be even more web start-up social communities.

Most are going to be gimmicky and bland.

Some will be gimmicky and bland, but find the right gimmick to reach a bunch of people.

A few will provide a nice service and fail.

Some will provide a nice service and flourish.

A couple will seperate themselves from the pack.

Who?

Hopefully those that bring a little bit of originality. Provide freelancers with an opportunity to make cash. So many of the social communities are headed by business moneys that only care about cash.

Hopefully a few sites with creative, innovative inspiration will make it; inspiring others.

Sports Sites look for fresh ground to plow

Rivals.com was recently bought out by Yahoo.com. Rivals is a college football/high school recruiting site that has a bunch of affiliated team sites. The purchase was for around $100 million.

News Corp. owns Scout.com, Rivals.com main competitor. Interestingly, NewsCorp. reportedly offered to swap MySpace.com for roughly 25% of Yahoo.

So, in essence, these companies would be partly owned by the same company. What they want is a younger audience. Here's an idea, "lower the subscription fees!"

(cute, huh?)

If Yahoo Ruled the World, Imagine That?

Everyone who's anyone knows, or should know, that Yahoo is undergoing some problems, makeovers and changes through the past 6 months. Their stock has fallen short lately, though increased tremendously since a year ago, while their employees seem to be crying mutiny against the alleged ill-run internet conglomerate. Keep in mind, the Yahoo search engine is second to only Google has the most popular search engine for internet users....not bad.

Now, let's not kid ourselves into thinking that the Yahoo empire is flushing down the tubes of this fickle internet toilet...(ha ha :) but, they are definitely turning a crossroad in their rise/maintenance of power.

The biggest news is that Terry Semel has stepped down from running Yahoo, and Jerry Yang has taken over as CEO of the company he co-founded. It all began during their annual meeting of the stock holders board, in which most of them came in to and left pretty unhappy and upset. Many of the managers and department executives at Yahoo have either resigned or pretty much been fired.

Lots of skepticism and opinion has been running wild throughout the internet news nerds/followers and especially those who hold stock in Yahoo. Some say, they aren't being managed efficiently, in fact, that's the biggest accusation against Yahoo for why their numbers don't look so good.

Another big story regarding Yahoo is the fact that Rupert Murdoch (of News Corps, owns MySpace) might sell Myspace to Yahoo, while keeping hold of at least 25% of their share. For Murdoch, and News Corps, this looks like an attempt to partner with a more established, consistent and reputable company like Yahoo...Let's call it, "family-friendly, warm and fuzzy feeling" type of company like Yahoo. Passing on their aquisition of sites like MySpace and bonding with Yahoo might bring in some better press regarding the way Murdoch runs business.

Hey, don't forget this one, Yahoo has also purchase Rivals.com, a popular sports network.

Web 2.0 is a quickly spreading type of social internet environment philosophy that has inspired many people, web developers and not, to create their own socially interactive websites. Google Maps And The Big Brother Controversy

Google Maps recently came out with this nice little add-on gadget to the Google maps tool called, "street view." Basically, it allow any viewer to see a street view, hence the name, of the exact location they are looking for. What does this mean to the naked eye public?

Of course the Google Maps Street view tool is becoming somewhat of a controversy amongst those who stay in the know on internet security, privacy and law. Hell, it's becoming an issue for just about anyone in the few cities that Google does allow the "Street view" tool to be used. And yes, it is just a few cities that have this feature activated and running.

Both the Microsoft tool and the Google tool are targeted at this point. Meaning, you can view everything, everywhere all the time because they don't, obviously, have the resources for that...YET. But, they want to have the resources for that OBVIOUSLY, and it's damn scary!

I definitely don't want to worry if my Mother is watching me stumble in late one night after a hard night out. Also, working in an internet savvy environment, I definitely don't want to worry if my boss is watching my house the day I call in sick!

New Microsot Photosynth: 3 dimensional Outer Photo Space

Microsoft has this cool new gadget called Photosynth. It takes a large collection of photos from you or other areas of the web that relate to one particular space or setting. Think...Venice, Italy or Disney World. Then, analyzes them for similarities, and displays them in a reconstructed three-dimensional space.

This new tool is so cool, I almost don't believe they can do it.

According to the Microsoft Lab page, the Microsoft Photosynth enables you to:

Walk or fly through a scene to see photos from any angle
Seamlessly zoom in or out of a photo whether it's megapixels or gigapixels in size
See where pictures were taken in relation to one another
Find similar photos to the one you're currently viewing
Send a collection - or a particular view of one - to a friend

The project takes multiple photos, flashed from multiple angles on one particular place. Like a cathedral, museum, etc. These photos could have all been taken by one person, or collected from multiple people over the web. Their sophisticated program, uses some kind of algorithm to identify what angle each photo was from, how big the actual image is in comparison to the others and ultimately relates them all in a logical way.

Once it has accomplished this, it puts the photos in a 3-D space and allows the viewer to navigate through it as if navigating through some flash model on the web, but instead of being animated models, it's the true photos all placed in their perspective area of the full scene. It's too crazy to explain, you will have to test it out for yourself. You can actually test it right now very easily, and I am just about positive you have NEVER seen anything like it.

Events Leading to the security initiative

The Read ID Act was "enacted" due to an increase in military spending budget. It was originally brought fourth on top of an act, "Emergency Supplemental Appropriations Act for Defense, the Global War on Terror, and Tsunami Relief, 2005." So, you can also say that it's purpose is to serve that of our American safety against the war on terror and Tsunami relief?

What is this act doing?

The Read ID Act entails government issued driver's licenses that follow the department of Homeland security's new standards...It's hopes are to ensure that anyone without these IDs cannot enter federal buildings, open bank accounts, or fly on commercial airlines.

As far as the commercial airlines, I have a bone to pick with the security there. I can honestly say I've made it through security with a lighter, with lipstick, with lotion and with matches. I can also honestly say that I've had my matches, lighters, lipstick and lotion taken from me and thrown away...Inconsistent? Just a little.

Why the controversy?

There are many bones picked concerning the Read ID act, but some of the main issues are privacy and the federal government's involvement. It began during the republican reign in congress, which I find interesting in numerous ways, considering the fact that republicans supposedly want less central government involvement, and while the act bleeds with the big brother aura, democrats are daily called socialists...hmmm?

My issue is the larger picture of the effects of such an act. Just like one federal government court case can change, add and delete laws, this act will cause the separation of state and federal government to become a little fuzzy. W

Myspace recently announced their implementation of a "Take Down Stay Down" function to control the posting of copyrighted content.

I've been following the Google and Youtube.com merger, through the ups, the downs the copyrights and the big business marketing initiatives. MySpace recently took action on their specific site against copyrighted video submitted to their site.

Basic MySpace Copyright Precautions Overview:

When content is submitted copyright owners have access to ban content due to infringement upon their content's privacy. Once the content is banned from the site, any further upload of the banner content is disabled.

Pretty sweet huh?

I'm not sure what the process of banning content is, but if the content is banned too frivolously it could become a violation of freedom of speech and online freedom. I love predicting problems that may occur when big online business make copyright, security and content control changes.

So my questions are...

How easily can copyright owners ban content?

How is a copyright owner established as...well...a copyright owner, giving them this access?

If they ban content, is it taken down right away, or monitored by MySpace admin?

3D Glasses Back In Style

Disney recently came out out "Meet The Robinson's" a 3D animated film and one of the first of it's kind. I haven't seen the movie, but now I definitely want to check it out. Apparently, the technology used for this type of 3D animated effect is a far cry from what I remember about 3D, like the SpiderMan Ride at Universal studios, or big goofy red glasses that only seemed half real.

The company that has been working on the project is Read D, who's president and co-founder Joshua Greer looks like he might have just stepped out of a comic book store, and doesn't look a day over 25.

Intel Inside Partners Google In Marketing Plan

Intel Inside is the world's largest microprocessor supplier, providing computer "insides" to resellers and private licenses. Like any good manufacturer, they had their own way of assisting their resellers and licensees in marketing the products that often go unnoticed and less understood than say, a 22" flat screen monitor. This included the ability for resellers to use their funds to purchase "gift-like" products with the intel logo and their purchasing agent, like pens, cups and mouse pads.

Intel is now partnering with Google to offer the resellers an entirely new marketing suite that gives them ability to conduct marketing campaigns using Google Adwords. Sounds simple, right? Well, if it were simple it would be much of partnership. Google is offering an interface that eases the resellers in purchasing campaigns, creating templates, managing their marketing initiatives and more.

The bigger picture here implies Google shift into a major hardware industry. Their reputation for sticking with what works and improving upon it without changing pace too much is also prevalent. While this merger is certainly not as juicy as say, Google's consumption of YouTube, it is still going to manifest some change within industries. King Bush Blatantly Strokes His Power Trip

This blog is for technology, I know that! But, I don't have a blog to write about politics, so I'll have to rant right here.

First off, I'm not the biggest fan of Pelosi, I think she's a bit too left for even my tastes. But, she really hit the nail on the head when she retorted to Bush's RETARDED actions concerning the majority vote of the congress to pull from the war, or at least start making plans to do so.

Here's what Big Bad Bull-shit Bush says:

"The House and Senate bills have too much pork, too many conditions on our commanders and an artificial timetable for withdrawal. And I have made it clear for weeks if either version comes to my desk, I'm going to veto it."

What bill doesn't have pork? Remind me Bush, since you so easily forget...Who voted for the congress who obviously were going to try and end the war?

For once since I can remember, the American people have needed to make change and voice their opinion through the power of democracy. We were left with no choice! Bush thinks he OWNS US, he thinks he's the goddamn king of the world.

Here's the second part of what he says...Typical

"also clear from the strong opposition in both houses that my veto would be sustained; that Congress continues to pursue these bills, and as they do, the clock is ticking for our troops in the field."

So, let me get this straight...We (the US people) voted for the democratic majority statistically because you suck at life (Mr. Bush) and we have absolutely no faith in your opinion, actions and motives concerning EVERYTHING, specifically this war. So, congress wants to make plans to end the war, you refuse to do it, and then blame congress because the troops aren't getting the $ the need? PLEASE STOP BEING LEMMINGS. THEY WILL KEEP TREATING US LIKE WE'RE STUPID AS LONG AS WE LET THEM.

Pelosi responds to Bush:

"So I just wish the president would take a deep breath, recognize again that we each have our constitutional role, and we should respect that in terms of each other,"

All the bull shit Bush said, and finally one sentence of sense in the whole dialogue.

FUCKING BABY. It's like he knew his entire life that one day he would be president, so always expected and practiced that type of power. He thinks he can do whatever he wants, and he DOES NOT care about anyone but himself and his personal agenda.

I am sick of dealing with a president who talks in southern slang, thinks quick come backs and clever, cute little sayings will get him voted for, and has such a perverted view of his place within our government that he actually says and does the DUMB ASS things that he does.

Even a teenager can watch him and say, "That wasn't very smart, why would he say that?"
Why doesn't Bush see how ridiculous his actions are? Because his IQ is probably below 100, if you ask me, hey, ask the majority of America.

Here's a story for you. I had a client, venture capitalist who thought he was really in on the internet and it's new technologies. Under his suggestion, wanted me to start bookmarking some of his articles through social bookmarking sites. So, I created some accounts and began to bookmark his articles, and other relevant articles to his industry.

One day passed, and he said that there was really no point. They weren't getting traffic because of it, and he thought about it and said, "Who really uses bookmark sites anyway? I need some PROOF"

I tried explaining to him the importance of natural placement, and why Google uses social bookmarking sites as a way to find naturally placed important articles, that users are already deeming important and relevant. I tried to explain that the days of "tricking" Google are slowly fading and will soon be gone. Anyway, it's another web 2.0 theory, things are difficult to explain.

So, in my own fit of geekdom pride I decided I WOULD prove it. I took 3 of his newest articles, un-indexed by Google, and bookmarked them through a few social bookmarking sites. Then, right in front of the non-believer, Googled the titles of the articles. Sure enough, his articles were indexed by at least 2 of the bookmarking sites on the FIRST page of Google, and not at all yet indexed through his website. Proof enough?

It's funny that I should read this article today, as I just had a VERY long conversation with my Dad about the future of the internet, what I should know about my target demographic, what regular everyday non-nerds use the internet for and how I can go about "helping" them through web development ideas.

As an internet and web enthusiast...and aspiring internet entrepreneur, I have already come to terms with this sad fact of reality. It's no surprise really; if everyone in the U.S. had the technology addiction I am deeply afflicted with, there would probably be no room on the table for my measly ideas and specialized skills. Just like I know jack about cooking, a fancy chef doesn't know much about what I do.

Too bad 1/3 of Americans didn't say they aren't interested in food and never will be...(sigh)

Really though, I not only knew this, I have been face to face with the plague that is the internet ignorance...And it sucks! So, I decided to write a little list.

"This website looks like a kindergarten website. Why are there images for every link? Why do I have to scroll halfway down the page to get to the man area? Can you design me one of those cool flash intros...Ya know, with music and pictures!"

Oh my, where to begin. I really don't have time to elaborate too much, I'll keep it simple and theory-like.

Basically, creativity is a very important aspect of web design. But, the industry has decided what works, the industry knows what keeps a user on the page, what helps them navigate through the page, what search engines look for, what colors enhance the screen view. We know what works, it is SUPPOSED to be standard. Of course, it will be forever until it is, but just understand that it is in your best interest to stick with the standard, the standard is the future. We can get creative from there!

2. SEO and Web Marketing

I worked for a company that used word documents for their forms. I'm talking complicated forms, where they would have to use calculators to add everything up, take the percentage, divide, etc. Mistakes were made, almost every day.

So, I designed some automated forms, that filled in the blanks, no need for a calculator. Spent one whole day redesigning the forms. Not only were they more functional, they were prettier too! What thanks did I get?

Well, Viacom finally laid down the law, suing Google for 1$ Billion. Wow, now that's not chump change, even for Google. And, Google is losing money on Youtube, even up until this very moment. (You can read the latest article on that if you click the link)

Internet law, while clear, is a growing facet of our world, and has it continues to complicate, grow and change, there will be some serious lessons learned. Lesson learned #1 to all those big companies looking to purchase an internet community hoping to triple your exposure and advertising dollar:

A 1.76$ billion purchase, might double in end price due to the rising interest in the internet, and you might just be the next example of a new internet smack down on laws.

Apparently Viacom was in the works of making some deals with Google concerning their all too obvious exploitation of clips, pieces and creative work from some of Viacom's major networks:
MTV, Comedy Central, VH1, Nickelodeon.

Turns out those "deals" fell through, and Viacom asked (for lack of a better word) Google and Youtube to remove more than 100,000 copyright owned videos from their site. Google agreed and removed the videos. Meanwhile, Viacom found over 50,000 more videos directly violating the creative copyright of their owners.

Enough is enough!

Viacom is saying (all in different contexts of course):

“built a lucrative business out of exploiting the devotion of fans to others’ creative works in order to enrich itself and its corporate parent Google.”

“which is based on building traffic and selling advertising off of unlicensed content, is clearly illegal and is in obvious conflict with copyright laws.”

In Response? Google has said:

“that YouTube has respected the legal rights of copyright holders.”

“We will certainly not let this suit become a distraction to the continuing growth and strong performance of YouTube and its ability to attract more users, more traffic and build a stronger community,”

Viacom had some things to say. While they have speculated to be threatened by Google and Youtube due to their clear exploitation of the cable network's T.V. shows and pieces, they have also been taking other routes to possibly try competing with the conglomerate. In a news clip from earlier:

From their struggling copyright issues, to the concern over whether or not YouTube is still the freshest, most popular online video distribution website among the slowly mountaining sites out there offering this service. Joost and Daily Motion to name a few of the possibly competitors in what was once a monopolized industry.

Murdoch has some insight when it comes to investing, but does he know this "industry" as well as it knows itself? I don't think any "consumer" of the YouTube site could tell you whether or not it will be their website of choice in a week, a month, a year. Why? Because when something better comes out, they'll switch just as fast as you can say, " . com"

While Youtube and Google are currently in deep. And, when I say deep I mean under profit,

While many of the rules for SEO and Web Marketing have not changed, there are many new rules that are gaining a higher importance within Google's Formula for ranking sites.

One of the most important factors to consider when marketing your website are outside links. This means that there are relevant pages on the internet, that have links leading back to your website. This sounds like an easy enough endeavor, but the initiative to get these links is becoming an internet craze. Meaning, that there are those who try and find ways to cheat the forumla, but creating sites on the web that are known as "Link Farms." Google is smarter than that, and when they realize that the links are coming from these sites, your page rank will plummet. To get quality, important, Google friendly outside links, follow these guidelines:

1. FACT: Getting 100 sites with a Google Page Rank of 4 or higher is not as beneficial (according to Google's Pagerank formula) as getting 1000 links from websites that have little to no importance according to Google. In other words, get as many relevant links back to your site as possible, the page rank of the websites linking to your site are not important.

2. Your links should be surrounded by relevant content. If the link to your site is on the bottom of a page, or top, with no content surrounding it, it will hold little importance. Digital Film Technology For Movie Theaters...It's About Time!

Warner Bros. Entertainment and a company called Digital Cinema Implementation Partners are proposing a new system, where films would be delivered to theaters via satellite and also delivered sooner than what is typical. The system would give theaters a lot of flexibility and customization of film presentation, when, how and where.

It's about time movie theaters offered customers the same quick, fast and easy distribution of movies that we can get over the web. What is great about this new technology is that if a particular area has a high demand for an indie film, or low budget flick, they can display it in an empty theater for just a few days and not risk spending the money on the film, waiting for it's delivery and only having a small audience.

Under pressure from state investigators, Best Buy is now confirming my reporting that its stores have a secret intranet site that has been used to block some consumers from getting cheaper prices advertised on BestBuy.com.

Wordpress just released information on a security risk within one of their installation versions. They highly recommend upgrading your Wordpress installation. A hacker gained access to the Wordpress.org server and modified the installation two files in WP to include code that would allow for remote PHP execution.

Does this affect you?

Apparently the hack only exists in the Wordpress installation version 2.1.1. If you downloaded this version, you NEED to upgrade your wordpress installation to 2.1.2 immediately.

MySpace continues to grow, moving to China, spanning across all genres of interests and making the most of the dollar amount its worth. Now MySpace musicians can sell their music on MySpace through their music store, wow, that's great!

Honestly, MySpace, I was thinking that your messy advertising and slow connection were just a phase. But, I'm beginning to think you really don't care about how I feel. I read recently that Murdoch is going to start profiling each MySpace user based on their interests, then he's going to try and sell them something! If you're a teenage girl who loves Fall Out Boy, they'll try and sell you Panic! at the Disco's new album. Don't believe me? Read that super news at This Forbes.com article

That's all well and good, I know you have to make money too, I wouldn't want your dear wife going without food and all...But there are some things that I would like before you start bombarding me with ads and up-sells while I'm simply trying to network with friends, enemies and frenemies.

1. Customizable MySpace page, similar to Blogger's widget templates. I don't want to go to some 3rd party, hacked MySpace layout website, give them my e-mail address and get 50 viruses on my computer. Also, what if I don't know HTML at all? I'm just asking for something small built in...Background color? Font? Image inputting into my page EASILY!?

2. Prettier, customizable blog area. Your blog area right now is pretty sad, sorry to say. Its more like posting announcements on my page than an actual, personalized blog.

3. Less SPAM groups. Is there any way you could be a little pickier when it comes to MySpace groups? I think you have about a million of them, half of which are something like, "for only $10 per month you could be a millionaire!" Really? Oh, yea why didn't I think of that earlier!?

4. Less spam users, bulletins EVERYWHERE basically. I get at least two MySpace friend requests from blatant spammers. Don't' get me wrong, its a free site and open for everyone, but why don't you use that creative advertising dollar mind of yours to come up with a way to filter this shit out?

5. Load up time decrease. Sometimes I log in quickly and easily. Other times I can't log in at all! "Oops! Myspace encountered a problem, try again later!" I get that message one out of every 7 times I try to log in. Seriously, this can't be all that difficult.

6. Have you heard of Web 2.0? You sure know how to make changes when it comes to adding new advertising pop-ups every time I log in, on the front page, within every page, all over the music I'm trying to listen to and search through. Can you do something with your crummy, hurts my eyes, icky to look at layout please?

7. Don't I deserve it? Why don't you start treating your users, the way they deserve to be treated. After all, without them, you advertising dollar would be worth an advertising six pence.

Youtube Will Pay Users for Their Videos!

On Saturday (January 27) Chad Hurley, Co-Founder of Youtube.com said they are going to start sharing their ad revenue with the millions of users posting videos to their site.

His proposed plan of paying Youtube users for their submitted videos, is opening up due to the expanding growth of Youtube's user base. He is quoted as saying, early on in the Youtube years, that paying users for the submitted video content would only instill in Youtube lovers the motive to make money and not their interest in videos.

By attaching ads to each submitted video on Youtube, they will share with the Youtube user the profit/revenue made by those advertisements. No news on the exact amount a user could make through submitted videos, but it will probably depend largely on the popularity of the video, the user's standing within the Youtube community and the subject of the Youtube video.

Bloggers and internet users alike are finding new ways to earn profit through their involvement within internet communities. Sites like Blogitive and PayPerPost are paying bloggers to write or submit video content on specific companies.
